I’ve gone on a Larry the Cable Guy rant before, and now that dislike’s been elevated thanks to several of the people I work with absolutely RAVING about his dumb movie Larry the Cable Guy Health Inspector. I’ve come to find all but one (Jeff Foxworthy) of the ‘Blue Collar’ guys. I get it, the guy is appealing, and his shtick works. But can we at least all agree that it’s just a shtick and a bit and fake? He went to the Kings Academy in West Palm Beach, Florida. He’s just a normal dude, not the the character he portrays:

I knew it was a bit of an act, I never knew it was THAT much of an act. Funny thing is, the jokes he tells there are basically the same as the ones he tells now, just with a different persona.

Ha ha. I thought so. I actually was watching one of his acts on comedy central just a few minutes ago and would pick up a hint of some non-accented words here and there. So I got on the computer to do a little research to find out if he was really “Larry the Cable Guy” or not. Kinda cool that it’s only an on-stage persona. He pulls it off well.

Like it or not, Larry is a human being with feelings as are we all!!! Yes, it’s true he really is Dan Whitney but that is his away from the spolight life and it’s neccessary. I met Dan in the Wal-Mart in Sanford, Fl. and he was one of the nicest people I have ever met. He was picking up some groceries and stop for a moment when I ask him if I could ask him a personal question. When I asked him if he had to call 411 Information to get the # for 911, he replied in his stage voice “The Funny Thing Is That I Had To Write It On The Wall With A Strawberry”. HA HA!!! I went on chatting with dan and told him that I had been boating on the St. Johns River and had lost my “Git-R-Done” hat. It was about 3am and I turned my boat around and turned on my spotlight only to see hundreds if not thousands of Gator Eyes everywhere. So needless to say I left my hat there. Dan then told me that the St. Johns River Gators were some of the BIGGEST, Larry The Cable Guy Fans around, HOW FUNNY!!!! So I don’t care what people say about Larry (Dan). Whether Dan is beening LARRY THE CABLE GUY or just being DAN WHITNEY, he is funny ALL AROUND. He is down to earth, loves all people and dosen’t just brush people off. DAN and LARRY are both FOR REAL. LARRY, I love the laughter you bring to my life and your the reason I act as KRAZY as I do. My whole life is built around Music and Humor. Since when was having a schtick such an evil thing? What’s the big deal if his act is fake or not? It’s FUNNY. Lots of comedians put on an act, Andrew Dice Clay is just another example.
Save your outrage for something more worthwhile. Dan Whitley is just making a good living making people laugh.
Excuse me….what do you mean “he doesn’t admit that it (his act) is a fake”??? I have seen him on SEVERAL talk shows (one being CMT Insider: March, 2006), where he tells how he got started playing the role of Larry the Cable Guy. He did little comedy skits several times on one certain radio station, and several people called the station to request his “Larry the Cable Guy” skit so often that he decided to just stay with that. So next time you want to cut on someone, make sure to do your HOMEWORK and that they really do deserve to be ratted out….like Bill Clinton…..now there’s a story!!!

I went to High School with Dan.
He came down at that time from Nebraska because his dad got a job as elementary principal at King’s Academy in 1979.
He had a country accent. It wasn’t too far off from the Florida Redneck and as most of the kids in the scholl were rednecks he picked it up easily.
Of course the character is schtick. But what makes it work is it’s not all that far from who he is.
He wasn’t a rich kid. He went to private school only becuase his dad worked there and tuition was included. He worked at Wendy’s, played in the pep band and was pretty much a class clown.
He’s worked hard and paid his dues to get where he is. I respect him. Those who don’t have a simple solution. Don’t watch him. Go about your life and quit bitching about someone elses’s success …. at least until you’re someone who most of us care about.

Believe it or not my B/F is the personification of Larry the Cable Guy.. Redneck thru and thru…that and a little of Archie Bunker. Truckdriver/Hunter/Fisherman/Outlaw if he shaved all but his goatee and wore a Git R Done hat and ripped sleeve flannel he’d be him.. even lookswise. For a guy who isn’t into kids movies, the movie Cars he had to buy for himself not even for the kids, I have to endure a poster of Mater on my bedroom wall and he almost went and used Cars wrappingpaper as wall paper, Lord help me I have to admit…I love Larry the Cable Guy too GIT ER DONE!!!!! LOL

I can’t believe you’re really upset about this. Look at Jerry Lewis. He had a shtick and it worked, and his worked goddamned funny too. If you hear his real voice, it’s NOTHING like the one that made him famous. So get over it, I’m from Sanford, most of us sound very normal, and Dan is a hell of a nice guy. He’d give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. Get over the Larry the Cable guy front and you’ll meet a very nice and genuine human being.

It’s probably not all that much of a major change of pace from his everyday life. He probably is a flag wavin’ redneck just like myself and much of America, and he has lived in Florida since he was 16 so the accent, while not natural, is probably the way he feels most comfortable speaking. If you’ve read his book or better informed bios of him most of this would be put into perspective. He tells it like it is, voices his opinions, and is funny as hell while doing it. That is what America is all about. GIT-R-DONE!

It’s quite another to BECOME that character. It’s creepy and fake. Would you not find it fake if Dave Chapelle created “Tron” for his TV show then became that character for every TV and radio interview or mall appearance? To be honest I am a fan of “Larry the cable guy”, and it does upset me to some degree that he is being bashed on such a level for petty things. Has knocked over old ladies on the street and I not hear about it? because that is the way some of you are acting… I mean really why not put this same effort into something more worth while? Wow, people actually thought he actually was a redneck named Larry? Yeesh, obviously the guy wears the same stupid sleveless shirts for every show or movie he does, so it should be clear that “Larry the Cable Guy” is just a character. Dwayne Johnson also went by a fake persona known as “The Rock.” Are you telling me you thought that was his name in real life too? Laughs, and Hulk Hogan is a real name too.
I don’t think that it is the name that people don’t like. After all actors have been using stage names for a long time. I think the issue a lot of people have is that he uses his Larry character for everything. He wants people to think that the characer’s personality and life story is his own. He does interviews in the Larry character, he does cartoon voices in the Larry character, and he is always credited as Larry the cable guy and not Daniel Witney. I think if he were to do more interviews as himself, like on the Tonight Show or something, he could probably win over some of his critics. But in all honesty it is only a matter of time before people get tired of Larry. If an actor only has one character up his sleave it becomes old and stale. Just look at Pee-wee Herman for example… okay so the whole sex scandal sort of sped that up, but people got sick of Paul Rubens’ Pee-wee character and he was forced to do some other characters. If Daniel wants to continue his success, he is going to have to flex his acting muscles and try a new character. Question is, is he talented enough to do that, or is he a one trick pony?
I am trying to understand what all the whining is about…If you go see the movie Cars, you would be paying to see Mader, a character of fiction. If you pay to go see Larry the Cable Guy, you would be paying to see yet another character of fiction…or maybe not! You see Larry, fictional or not, represents many who are hard working, down to earth people who Love America! Heck, I’m not even a redneck and he has my heart and I am right behind him in his right wing mindset with a passion to speak the truth. Funny, yes! Does he share a message that we need to listen to…absolutely yes! And America better get behind him and stop worrying whether or not his accent is “fake”…his podium isn’t!!! On another note, I went to high school with Danny…he was as genuine then as he is now. Fame hasn’t changed him…he is the most humble, nicest guy you would ever want to meet. By all means, do not compare him to Pee Wee Herman! Danny is the real deal…wish some of you would examine our president as closely as you examine our comedians…some day soon, you’ll wish you had!
