The Phillies just won the series against the Chicago Cubbies behind the arm of Brett Myers. Myers, who went the full 9 and struck out 12, got a huge, prolonged cheer at the end of the game and was the player of the game. He also had an interview with Harry Kalas after the game.
Why is this interesting? Well, it pulls the Phillies within spitting distance of the Padres for the NL Wild Card. But it also proves that many fans change their minds with the wind. Many fans were willing to deal Myers after publicly hitting his wife in Boston. Some even wanted him cut. The Phillies were bashed by some for not disciplining him, and fans were down on him. Some were writing him out of the 2007 Phils starting rotation.
And then he started pitching well again. Despite his 4.27 ERA in the 2nd half, his peripheral numbers vastly improved(sans homers per 9) and he’s been simply stellar in September (2-0 2.70 ERA 31Ks 1.10 WHIP). And fans love him again. The media does too…check out Post Game Live with my favorite buddy Johnny Marz. Read the columns tomorrow praising Myers for tonight’s display.
Now…I personally don’t care what an athlete does as long as they perform. He screwed up, and I was willing to accept that. But many weren’t. I’d simply like some consistency from people. Does anyone still think we should deal the guy?
