Do you have a 9 to 5 office job? Do you have to drive somewhere on a daily basis? Are you just one of the millions around the nation who likes to listen to the radio, but are tired of top 40 and ‘hot talk’ bullshit? Well you’ve come to the right place! Here’s a non-comprehensive list of suggestions for you to download from iTunes, from the interwebs, wherever. These are podcasts I listen to at work, or podcasts I recommend to others. Check ‘em out:
On The DL – Dan Levy and Nick Tarnowski take you through the wide-world of sports, discussing the topics of the day with bloggers like AJ Daulerio from Deadspin, Drew Magary from Kissing Suzy Kolber, that bald orange dude from Monday Night Football, and dozens of others. And they’re going to start pumping out five shows a week starting in March! What more could a sports fan need?
BS Report w/ Bill Simmons – Well, how about the best part of ESPN pumping out his own podcast? The Sports Guy discusses basketball, football, baseball, and pop culture. He’s recently had on Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel, so expect some funny and enteraining people to stop by on a consistent basis.
Adam Carolla Podcast – Recently booted off the FM airwaves, he’s taken to the internet to solve his need to talk into a microphone. Though it’s in its infancy, the production has already netted a discussion with Adam’s old Loveline partner Dr. Drew Pinsky. Expect more to come.
Pokerroad and its various podcasts – Pokerroad radio, the brainchild of poker pros Joe Sebok and Barry Greenstein, brings humor, insight and updates to you for free. Cash Plays, The Poker Beat, Pokerroad Radio and Two Jacks in the Hole all provide their own views, from a look at the tournament circuit with PR Radio to the completely humorous non-poker duo that bring you Two Jacks.
NPR Fresh Air and NPR Radio Times – Terry Gross is a solid interviewer, taking anywhere from 12 to 40 minutes to delve into the daily guest’s subject. Her Philly counterpart Marty Moss-Coane highlights local and national political and news issues in the most professional manner possible, moderating a lively debate of opinions and callers.
Ricky Gervais Podcast – Do you like to laugh? If you do, Gervais is for you. He’s to be a great straight man for the insanely hilarious Karl Pilkington. Pilkington will make you think you could eat a nob at night.
Jay and Jack LOST – The quintessential fan podcast for that crazy LOST show. Recaps, crackpot theories, and listener feedback all bring the heat.
Dan Patrick Show – Want something just like radio? So much so it ACTUALLY IS A RADIO PROGRAM? Here you go! The best part of Patrick’s show are when he interacts with NBA legends Reggie Miller and Charles Barkley. When Barkley’s not in jail, that is.
Film Junk – A couple Canadians telling us all what’s up at the movies. They have a great rapport, know their stuff, and have great divergent opinions on cinema. Did you want a 15 minute breakdown of I Now Prounounce You Chuck & Larry? Hell, they did just that!
At one point or another I’ve listened to all of these, and they pass the test. I’ve listened to several others, and rather than slag them off and name them as dreck or boring, let’s just say they didn’t make the cut. Check the above out though. They’re pretty good. Some are as close to radio quality as you’ll get, while others are completely amatuer…and that’s part of the charm. It’s about passion and entertainment. Everything (but Gervais) is free, there’s no restrictions, and you choose what you want to hear. Have at it.
And if you’re actually able to listen to all of the above, or more…wow. There’s so much content it’s pretty much impossible to do that and maintain a life. Remember, moderation is key!
