And all it took was Alec Baldwin hosting the show, Christina Aguilera singing, spots from Tina Fey and Tracy Morgan, Steve Martin guesting, Martin Short, Paul McCartney guesting, and a suprise appearance from Tony Bennett (and a duet with Aguilera). Baldwin was great as usual, taking over several sketches. But perhaps the single best sketch was one of the last ones, where he played Tony Bennett. He hosted a talk show and absolutely NAILED Bennett’s mannerisms and voice…and then brought out his imposter (the real Bennett).
If all it takes to make SNL funny again is to bring back old cast members and have Alec Baldwin host every week, do it. I do think Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader are some funny cast members, and Darrell Hammond is always good, but besides that it seems that nothing that is written is played that well and no one is able to overcome the average writing. Guys like Phil Hartman and Steve Martin made every sketch funny. Not everyone is able to do that.
