Allen Iverson Is A Team Player; Chris Webber Isn’t

17 Nov

You don’t believe me? Try this on for size:

“That’s the fun part about basketball,” Iverson said after the game. “I used to always feel like whenever I struggled, it wasn’t a fun game. But when you’re struggling and you still win, that just says a lot about the guys you’re playing with.”

He struggled against the Supersonics on Wednesday, but a terrific performance from Andre Iguodala ensured a victory.  Allen has been talking about his teammates for quite some time now, and it appears to be finally paying off.  Iguodala is taking a step forward this year, with the only stat category not being improved is points per game.  The offense is flowing through him more, and Iverson has no problem with it.

And then there’s the case of Chris Webber.  He privately expressed some concern about his lack of playing time in the 4th quarter of games.   He’s still averaging 30 minutes a game, but the offense isn’t flowing through him AT ALL, and his numbers are down as a result.  Now he’s publicly said he’s unhappy with his role:

“I’m not going to keep playing like this,” Webber told the Bee after scoring six points in 23 minutes Wednesday as the Sixers beat Seattle, 96-90. “I don’t like this role. So you can take that however you want.”

Well, you know what Chris?  Who honestly gives a flying flip?  Last year the offense tried to integrate itself with your slow ass and it resulted in a losing record.  You shot a ridiculously low 43% for a PF, and were the most inefficient 20 point scorer in the league.  So now it’s time to realize that you’ve broken down and cannot be relied on to carry the offensive (and especially defensive) load for this time.  Sam Dalembert and Steven Hunter are much younger, and just better, at this point.  You can request a trade all you want, but who the hell would take you and your salary?  You’re stuck, learn to live with it.

It’s just quite amazing that Iverson has been the guy that people have pointed to in the past as a selfish player, and it ends up that his teammate is actually the selfish one.  And having the two discuss the team so differently in the same article just highlights how far apart they are.
