Pete Laforest Set To Lead Phillies Parade Down Broad Street

4 Sep

You might have thought the Philadelphia Phillies were floundering.  You might’ve been considering turning off the next couple games.  Well, stay tuned in my friends, for the Phils have officially signed the savior of the season! Strap yourselves in for Mr. Chris Coste Part II:

Catcher Pete Laforest was claimed by the Phillies off waivers from the San Diego Padres, the club announced today.

Laforest, 29, appeared in 10 games for San Diego and hit .360 (9-25) with one home run and three RBI. A left-handed hitter, Laforest was designated for assignment by the Padres on August 31. In 86 games for triple-A Portland this season, Laforest hit .230 with 29 home runs and 72 RBI. He finished seventh among all triple-A players in home runs and had four 5-RBI games.

Originally selected by Montreal in the 16th round of the 1995 draft, Laforest has appeared in 54 major league games for Tampa Bay (2003 and 2005) and San Diego (2007) and has a career average of .204 (28-137) with two home runs and 13 RBI.

To make room for Laforest on the 40-man roster, the Phillies transferred righthander Ryan Madson to the 60-day disabled list. He will wear #4 and is expected to be in uniform by Wednesday in Atlanta.

I AM GANGBUSTERS KID! I AM ELATED!  A catching crew of Carlos Ruiz, Chris Coste and Rod Barajas wouldn’t be complete without a French-Canadian with which to mix it up!  One career minor leaguer wasn’t enough, we needed two!

I do have to admit that his stats are looking nice for 2007:

AAA Portland

  • 296 AB  .230 avg  347 OBP  544 SLG –  891 OPS
  • 6 doubles, 29 homers, 2 SB  54 BB/92 K

MLB San Diego

  •  25 AB .360  467 OBP  520 SLG – 987 OPS
  • 1 double, 1 homer, 0 SB, 5 BB/8 K

Not bad, if a bit weird and random.  Only 6 doubles and yet 29 homers? Could be the super short porches down the line at PGE Park(319 left, 321 right).  Still, it’s an impressive number in just 296 AB.  He also seemed to have hit well in the majors, providing a good spark off the bench in both April and August.  The Padres tried to slip him through the waiver wire but the Phils were too smart!  They saw the potential for him to be a prime candidate to steer the float during the parade.  Team Canada baby!

Welcome Pierre, hope you fit right in!

Well, we didn’t have a left-handed hitting catcher. So, that solves that.

Now, all we need is a left-handed throwing catcher, and we’ve clinched a playoff berth AND a bye.
