97.1 KLSX In LA Is Flipping Formats, Adam Carolla Fired

19 Feb

The relatively decently-rated KLSX is going to be flipped over into a top 40 radio station!  Yay, another top 40 station!!! Orange County Register with the details:

Talk KLSX/97.1 FM will flip to a new Top 40 format called “AMP RADIO” at 5 p.m. Friday, CBS announced Wednesday.

Current talk show hosts Adam Carolla, the team of Frosty, Heidi & Frank, and Tom Leykis will do their final shows live Friday, with Leykis tossing the switch at 5 p.m. to “AMP RADIO,” which will begin with 10,000 songs in a row with limited commercial interruption “or about 28 days of just full-on music,” according to Dan Weiner, senior vice president and market manager for CBS radio in Los Angeles.

The format, described as playing “all the hits,” will also be online at http://www.ampradio.com. Artists will include Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Rihanna, T.I., Kanye West, Usher, Britney, Pink, Kelly Clarkson, and Katy Perry, among others.

AMP Radio!!!! OMGZ!  I had no clue where to listen to the above artists, so this is definitely a welcome addition to the airwaves.  Who needs original talk radio with Adam Carolla when one can listen to an extra Katy Perry song.  She kissed a girl and she liked it, you know.

Haha…terrible news (not that I get that station anyway), nice commentary.

I just heard about this on the way to work and I’m asking myself the same question that you posed: why, why, why, why, WHY?

  3. Beka February 19, 2009 at 1:10 pm #

Well, they will be losing a lot of listeners for sure. There are already a few local stations that play top 40 music, but this is the only good talk radio station out there, unless you want to listen to Rush and Dr. Laura. This really stinks. Adam Carolla is one of the few really intelligent shows on the radio right now. And funny as hell.

    This is just total CRAP!!
before i found out 97.1 free fm
i hated the radio so much
then i found FHF and Tom Leykis
    and i became hooked!
    This a total shock!

There are just to much crap on the radio
and this new AMP thing they are trying
in just going to add more crap to crap
Thanks for craping all over what good
    CBS had out there.

There is talk about the newpapers stopping
well i see the radio business going next
to poor decisions like this one!

    Long live, Carolla, FHF, Leykis!

In other words someone at CBS is going to plug-in their iPod to the broadcast antena and push play.
This is really sad. I’ve been a listener of KLSX for over 8 years and this has come to a shock for me.
I think this is just lazy work from CBS. They were the only game in town when it came to FM talk radio. CBS has shown how incompetant they are if they can’t sell advertising for the only Los Angeles all FM talk radio.

  6. Chris February 19, 2009 at 6:26 pm #

Diego – Exactly. Radio needs to provide something different from what’s currently available from an mp3 player. Top 40 is not that. Carolla was.

  7. Robert Simpson February 19, 2009 at 6:26 pm #

Worry Not Leykis and Carolla. F*** it, we’ll even follow you to AM if we must. The new 97.1 ….. KLSUX!

    I’m totally nude!

    I’ve gotta boner!!

    …and I’ve gotta take a shіt!!!

I will really miss the Tom Leykis show on my way home from work. Ahhh well I guess my iPod will have to do. LA radio is the worst overplayed market. We need something different.

  10. Steve February 20, 2009 at 12:54 pm #

Oh well, another piece of crap “TOP 40”. I have “JACK” for that.

  11. Keith February 20, 2009 at 2:43 pm #

It’s really all the Advertisers fault for not recognizing the audience. The crap that did get advertised for the last couple of years couldn’t have gotten much response. Seriously: Ashley Madison dot com. What CRAP!

We will truly miss FHF and even Tom Leykis (Who got a lot better in recent months when he started focusing on real topics and showed us again how intelligent he really is.).

Take us all out Coby style!

  12. Atom February 20, 2009 at 5:51 pm #

This sucks, I listen to this station every weekday. I listened to this station to AVOID Top 40 music stations.

Like INDIE 103 this station will be missed in LA.

  13. Boneman February 20, 2009 at 6:31 pm #

Wow. The hosts of this radio sataion meant so much to so many people. I can’t fathom how a dedicated TALK radio station can just change format to TOP 40 – what every other friggin radio station plays! How can CBS not see this???

Think about it, 97.1 is all talk…so poeple who want music DON”T LISTEN TO IT! And the people who do listen to it, DON”T LISTEN TO MUSIC ALL DAY!!

CBS must have a full on idiot calling the shots now to pull this off….

I’m sad, as Carolla and FHF have ‘been there’ for me for over 2 years now and it was always comforting to hear their voices every week day. No matter how you were feeling, it was always nice to hear them and I am lucky enough to have a job that I can listen to them over the web. My day will be empty without them and not the same.

However I am happy and optimistic that talent like Carolla and FHF will get picked up by another, SMART radio staion. I mean FHF went out as the #1 afternoon talk show!!!! They hinted at something and I think they already have something in the works with another station and even their parting video on FHF.com suggests this. I don’t think it will be long before we hear FHF together again soon on another station….a station that will get most of 97.1’s listeners.

Hang in there folks, I don’t hink we’ve heard the last of Adam or FHF!

    ..Talk Soon?

  14. Andy February 20, 2009 at 7:46 pm #

i hope its safe to assume that we all BOYCOT this new monstrosity of top 40 crap – i am soooo pissed

  15. peter pasquale February 21, 2009 at 2:13 am #

Dan Weiner, a idiot VP at CBS is a crack-head. If a station is making money in this economy – leave it the fuck alone you greedy corporate bastards. Burn in Hell.

I drove from OC to the Pub on Fairfax to see Leykis. I got there just as he was leaving, so the professor walked right by me, but I missed all the fun.

The line to get in went up the block and it wasn’t moving. I said fuck that and went to the back door, which was open and I just walked in.

The shows were not cancelled because of lack of profits.

It is because of the FCC!. Why do you think Howard Stern moved out of the FM realm? Sirius is almost bankrupt.

In talk radio, you can use the 1st amendment to criticize terrible people, companies and government. Can anyone not realize that the FCC (government) had something to do with this?

Even in a Democratic county, freedom of speech is a bitch!

…and we still can’t find Osama.

  17. Ken February 21, 2009 at 1:59 pm #

It has nothing to do with the FCC.
Its all about dollars and cents.
After Stern left, the ad revenue plummeted.
With the ratings being flat, the ad money dried up even more.
It just couldnt support the high salaries of the on-air talent.
Theres maybe a much bigger demographic for this kid of music.

Its definitely a sad day for the small number of us that want something other than the same music, which is something we ALL have on our computers or iPod to begin with.

This is no different than a tv show that gets canceled.

  18. FCC No February 21, 2009 at 4:53 pm #

How much does CBS pay you Ken?

Stern did make a differnce but we still had an all star cast on FREE FM. The ad money dried up because of the “economy.” Maybe CBS should have asked for a bailout.
TV show canceled? FHF, Carolla, & Leykis all had #1 ratings.
KLSX was on the air for 13 years. How many TV shows can do that? It’s easy lumping things together.

It is sad that Indy 103.1 was changed into a Mexican (spanish) station. It is also sad that so many people listen to TOP 40 stations.

    Is radio dead?

  19. peter pasquale February 22, 2009 at 1:17 am #

As far as I am concerned Radio has been now formally replaced by the IPOD. Why should anyone plod through 10 god awful songs from tone-deaf punks, when with a flick of your fingers you can get all the music you like? The suits at CBS are such stupid morons it is beyond comprehension. Talk radio is unique each day. Every day the product is new. Unless one goes to the trouble to download podcasts, stuff on the IPOD does match what is coming over the radio. That’s why Leykis and FHF, etc and even KFI are number 1 – their content is new every day. DUH.

  20. DS February 23, 2009 at 12:07 pm #

Although I never listen to that station I agree that it is total BS. What makes me even more furious is that never mind that CBS canceled the good shows and replaced it with crappy TOP 40 music. Add the switching the 103.1 to yet another Mexican station, Los Angeles radio scene becomes irrelevant. But there is a still a glimmer of hope. There is 106.7 with Kevin and Bean in the morning between 5:30 and 9am. I have been a long time listener and the show is pretty entertaining. If you liked Adam Carolla show you might like K&B, plus Adam used to worked with those guys long time ago. If you miss the 103.1 there is local collage radio station KCRW 89.9 which plays similar music that 103.1 used to play. The music show is between 9am and 12pm. Try them out, you might like it.

    DS,

You mean we all need to get Sat radio. FM talk is dead in So Cal.

    You are an intern, correct?

With my iPhone I can listen to streaming podcasts over the air 3G wireless. It’s my salvation from a horrible commute.

Tom Leykis has been a cancer on society. He is an insensitive person without any moral compass beyond making money and having sex. For years, he ridiculed anybody who made a low salary, no matter how important their role in society. He crapped on everybody from nurses to construction workers, solely on the basis of their earning power (or lack thereof). He endorsed mainstream definitions of “beauty” as defined by the advertisers who control Big Media, and although fatter than an elephant, he loved to abuse anybody he considered to be obese…..all part of his rather pathetic self-hate syndrome. He taught men how to lie and cheat and delighted in their tales of deception, although in a typical double standard, he would excoriate anybody he felt had duped him in any regard.

Now, if there is any Karma in the Universe, he soon will learn just how little demand exists for a deceitful, hate-filled radio babbler in a society that is so very lacking in the people who perform all the REAL work (everything from building roads to treating sewage). Those are the people who should be getting proper remuneration in our society, not some worthless paper pusher on Wall Street or some useless misogynist radio jock.

I am all in favor of men learning how to deal with women, but NOT for treating them like dirtbags. Leykis spewed hate and venom to young generations who desparately NEED to learn honesty, tolerance, patience, and appreciation, given that they are so lacking in those particular character traits.

Is it any wonder that America is falling into a toilet on every conceivable level (economy, infrastructure, environment,
culture, etc), given the ethical wasteland in which it exists? Thanks, Leykis, for your generous contribution to the destruction of this once great nation, and to your even greater contribution to the poisoning of future generations’ minds.

    So, Leykis fan, right?
