Five Years Since Harry Kalas Passed Away

13 Apr

Great tribute from Comcast Sportnet:

And our initial post when he abruptly passed away that fateful day in DC.

I’ll never forget 1993. I’ll never forget 2008. I’ll never forget his home run call for Michael Jack.  Here’s to you, Harry.

My Reason To Exist, Chris Wheeler, ‘Steps Down’

8 Jan

They let the wrong man go. Chris Wheeler, 37-year veteran of the Philadelphia Phillies broadcasts, took a step back from the mic and ‘stepped down’ today. Gary ‘Sarge’ Matthews also was given the unceremonious boot. ‘Tis a sad day for unintentional comedy fans. At first, this blog hated Chris Wheeler. We marveled at his oft repeated phrasesand wondered how bad Sarge would be. But, time came and went, the Phillies won the World Series, and our cold, black hearts melted a little for ol’ Chris. He danced for joy. He loved him some Phillies. He was a fan that got lucky enough to get paid to broadcast for his favorite team. He’ll never be mistaken for a great broadcaster, and will eventually be forgotten by most of the fan base, but he was a great fan. He had fun out there. And there isn’t much more this blog can ask for someone.

Godspeed, Wheels.

And fuck you Tom McCarthy.

Paypal’s Equivalent of a VOID Slot Machine Win Hits A Delco Man

21 Jul

It’s happened before, it’ll happen again; someone checked their online bank account and it stated they had more money than previously thought. Big whoop, right? However, this time’s slightly different:

Delaware County resident Chris Reynolds received just such a shocking delivery from PayPal on Friday, when he opened his monthly statement from the online money-transfer company via email and saw that his ending balance was $92,233,720,368,547,800.

“I’m just feeling like a million bucks,” Reynolds told the Daily News yesterday. “At first I thought that I owed quadrillions. It was quite a big surprise.”

Exciting news! This man now has more than all the money ever created ever in the history of ever! And he’s in our state! Think of the tax revenue:

After absorbing the initial shock, Reynolds logged on to PayPal’s site and saw that his balance was listed there as zero.

Sad trombone.

Shit. Oh well, fun while it lasted. Also, this could be the first time ‘sad trombone’ has been written in the copy of a newspaper article.

In any event, what would’ve this fine upstanding young man have done with the money? Why, buy the Phillies! (and something about pay off debts):

“I’m a very responsible guy,” he said. “I would pay the national debt down first. Then I would buy the Phillies, if I could get a great price.”

Olivia Munn. There are no words.

Seems Jrue Holiday doesn’t have a fan over at Liberty Ballers.  Synopsis: he’s not sure of him as a player and thinks it was the wrong pick if the Sixers are trying to take the next leap NOW instead of two years from now.  Fair points.

Who the hell is starting for the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday??? NO IDEA. Reading Phils outfielder Michael Taylor fields questions from PhoulBallz.com.  Where the heck were the wrestling questions, Ballz?

Ambition, Impatience and Sloth asks why it’s so damn tough to get anything done on healthcare.  Answer: BLAME THE SYSTEM!

Adeel the Canadian discusses Korean society. I’d say more but I only feel comfortable around those of a similar age to mine.

Kyle Kendrick Is Leading The Race For Fifth

16 Feb

It’s been reported by the Philly Inquirer that Kyle Kendrick’s the frontrunner for the fifth spot of the rotation.  JA Happ, Carlos Carrasco and Chan Ho Park are currently trailing him, all eager to displace the lad.  Kendrick has his fans, who compare him to other pitchers who rely on control.  Heck, the Phillies themselves have the most extreme example of soft-pitch success in Jamie Moyer.

However, what seals Kendrick’s fate to me is Happ.  Happ has nothing left to prove when the games count.  He pitched well in AAA Lehigh Valley, provided some solid outings in Philadelphia last season, and puts up a consistent K per 9. Kendrick still needs to prove he can hit his spots when the games matter for me to feel at ease when he’s on the mound.  That feeling won’t be created by hearing Rich Dubee talk about his 21 career wins.

It’d be preferable for Kendrick to spend some time up in Lehigh Valley before he steps on the rubber at Citizen’s Bank Park.  Give Happ a chance.  If he runs with it, great.  If not, you always have Kendrick, Park, or Carrasco to fall back on.
